A Guide to Discreet Breast Feeding

Medical experts agree that breastfeeding is the healthiest way to nourish your baby. In fact, the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends breastfeeding for the first six months of your baby's life. There are so many benefits of breastfeeding for babies and moms alike. Breastfed babies get sick less often because they have more protection against infection and illness. Moms are able to lose baby weight more quickly and may even minimize their risk of certain cancers and osteoporosis. One consideration for any woman considering feeding their baby this way is discretion. Here are some tips for discreet breast feeding that can make the process more comfortable for everyone.
First, make sure you are stocked up with the right kind of clothing. You will need shirts that button in the front so that all you need to do is unbutton rather than taking your shirt all the way off. In addition, you will need a good nursing bra with flaps that open easily for feeding. Breast pads inserted into your bra prevent unsightly leaks onto your clothing. When breastfeeding at home, you may not need a nursing cover. Breastfeeding in public, however, is a different story. For this, a nursing cover is a must.
Most nursing covers are made from cotton and are worn by placing the strap over the head. The cover provides total privacy for mom and baby. There are all kinds of covers available, including designer choices in a variety of fashionable covers and prints. If you want something a bit more luxurious than cotton, there are even silk nursing covers and those made from plush microfiber. Some nursing covers come with UV protection for breastfeeding outdoors. There are lots of choices for even the most discriminating new mom!
Depending on where you're at, there may be a special area for discreet breast feeding. Many stores, restaurants and other public locations offer ladies' restrooms with comfortable seating. This is the ideal place to breastfeed in public if you need to. Some new moms feel uncomfortable even considering breastfeeding in public. This is something that can be dealt with over time. The more you breastfeed and the more comfortable you become, the more natural the process will feel. Once you are an expert at breastfeeding, you will be more likely to feel comfortable feeding your baby in public. If you cannot bring yourself to do so, try pumping milk into a bottle for public outings.
